I am posting today from the Lotus Bird Lodge in Cape York. This lodge is an absolute haven here in the outback. After two weeks of difficult travel on roads from hell this lodge looks and feels like Nirvana. These roads are definitely for 4-wheel drive vehicles ONLY and not for the faint-hearted. If you don't have the right kind of vehicle, don't even think about it! You can see for yourself if you take a peek at the Land Rover At Work pages on the website.
I do feel somewhat concerned about what lies ahead when I hear folks refer to the road as 'shocking.' If you look at a map of Australia we are still a hard, two-day drive from the northern most tip of the continent - yes, two days even though it is only 570 kilometers (or 356 miles) from here. We will need a minimum of twenty hours to cover that distance - at a snail's pace - which gives you an idea just how difficult the driving can be at times.
