Dr. Nicole Duplaix

Well, if you think that we have just been sitting here enjoying a rest after our Australian adventures, think again! We have been doing some much needed revamping of our web site to make it work better and look more professional.

Tell us if you think we succeeded.

Meanwhile I am flying off tomorrow to Suriname for two weeks, a small country on the 'forehead' of South America. I was there 25 years ago to study the Giant otter, a rare and endangered species that had been wiped out by pelt hunters over much of its range that spread down all the way to Argentina. I'm going back now on behalf of the Oceanic Society to see whether another long-term study can be launched in its rainforest stream habitat. A long cry from the red sands of the Outback!

But don't worry, I will not be disappearing for years on end. Far more qualified and physically fit graduate students will be doing the research. All I am doing is giving my blessing or my veto when or where it's needed.

Visit our Suriname website for progress reports!
