Follow along with our two travellers as they criss-cross 45,000 km in Australia in their Land Rover Defender during the period from September 1999 through September 2000. Read their written updates from the field in chronological order. These were posted to the internet from cyber cafes wherever and whenever they could find them, which sometimes wasn't easy.
These field notes are very often 'tongue-in-cheek' -- they make great fun of ourselves as we experience the riches and the challenges of the Outback. We know that any Aussie worth their salt would have managed considerably better than we did, even though we are experienced travelers ourselves. Australia has a uniqueness all its own. We tried to chronicle that, partly to let other international visitor know what they might be in for, both fun and ffff-frightening.
We absolutely loved Australia! Nothing in these field notes should be construed as critical of this great country. Any real criticisms have to do with some of the horrific international tour operators which are allowed to move into a local area and 'take over' without local input or local regulation. This happens all over the country. Australia definitely is in need of a system of quality, regulated local ecotourism programs that are designed to protect its fragil flora and fauna; at the same time that it educates international visitors about what they can, and cannot do, in relation to these natural treasures.
