The Character of Provence (II)

Nothing describes so well the humor and the real character of Provence as this second passage from Peter Mayle's book, Encore Provence:

"One of our recent guests, a man prone to the extravagant gesture while talking, knocked a glass of red wine over his trousers. The next day he took them to the dry cleaners. Madame spread the trousers on the counter, examining the strains with a professional eye and a discouraging shake of the head. It was possible, she said, that the stains could be removed, but that would depend on the wine. Was it a Chateauneuf or one of the lighter Luberon reds? Amazed that he couldn't remember, she then gave him a short lecture on the staining capabilities of various wines, according to their tannin content, and seemed ready to move on to particular vintages when the arrival of another customer distracted her.

Our friend returned to the house greatly impressed. He said he had spilled wine on his trousers all over Europe, and in several major cities in the United States. But never had the provenance of his stains been so thoroughly questioned. Next time this happened, he said, he would be sure to take the wine label and perhaps a few tasting notes in with his trousers."

Every village has its market day - and you can find a wonderful market somewhere, every day of the week!

Ornate bell towers call out the hour from sunrise to sunset

A magical view of the Luberon from the top of Mount Ventoux. No filters were used here, this is how it looks

Fountains with such wonderous faces are everywhere - this is a closeup of one of four such ancient faces in a village square

Lovely Provencal colors at the market in L'Isle s/la Sorgue

So many designs to choose from, so little time!

The marketplace is alive with color and it is a photographer's dream. Markets are therefore not to be missed! Of course, the food is good, too...

Dogs are an important part of life in France, from the glamour of Paris to the most petit and unassuming villages of Provence. Dogs here are almost universally well-behaved

Bistroes are another crucial part of life in France - we many a refreshing Pastis along the way!

Ancient grillwork is in evidence everywhere - although it is not so easy to photograph. Here, an early morning fog engulfs and enhances the grillwork on this Lacoste bell tower

The octagonal shape is common to fountains, and they are inviting to collectives of humans. This one we managed to photograph in a rare moment of solitude
