The Marquis de Sade

~If Only Walls Could Talk!~

The windows that the Marquis himself looked through as he took in the vista of Lacoste from his ruinous perch

The Marquis de Sade lived in this castle high above the small town of Lacoste in 1771 where he masterminded extravagant Sade-istic orgies until his arrest in 1778.

Such pastimes were not unusual for the nobility at the time, but Sade also wrote about them in great detail which proved his undoing. For it he spent 14 years in the dreaded Bastille prison and then, after the French Revolution, ended his days in an insane asylum. He continued writing all about it until the very end. His books, long banned by the Catholic church, only became available 50 years ago.

When you visit these ruins, try to do so in heavy fog like we did. But watch for ghosts! We crept around the base of these ruins in the early morning fog to get these different perspectives, and we could almost hear the Marquis laughing as he gazed down upon us.

This is a wide- angle shot from very close up, looking straight up

A fortress it was, this castle of the Marquis de Sade. The access is limited and the steppes steep - and the stones have stories to tell

This is the more typical photograph of the ruins. But the blue sky just doesn't do it for us if communicating a 'sense of place' is what you are after
