The
Marquis de Sade lived in this castle high above the small town
of Lacoste in 1771 where he masterminded extravagant Sade-istic
orgies until his arrest in 1778.
Such
pastimes were not unusual for the nobility at the time, but Sade
also wrote about them in great detail which proved his undoing.
For it he spent 14 years in the dreaded Bastille prison and then,
after the French Revolution, ended his days in an insane asylum.
He continued writing all about it until the very end. His books, long banned by the Catholic church,
only became available 50 years ago.
When
you visit these ruins, try to do so in heavy fog like we did.
But watch for ghosts! We crept around the base of these
ruins in the early morning fog to get these different perspectives,
and we could almost hear the Marquis laughing as he gazed down
upon us.
