Short Stories

by Denise Goodfellow

(Lawungkurr Maralngurra)

Australian author Denise Goodfellow works as a biological and cross-cultural consultant for television, and she writes and illustrates fauna books. She spent some of her childhood in the mallee country of South Australia and then moved in 1975 to the Northern Territory where she still makes her home.

This is a remarkable woman. Crocodile, buffalo, snakes, Aboriginal culture, birds of Australia - she knows a great deal about all of them. She knows these things not only from a technical, biological perspective but from that of a gifted member of an Aboriginal clan who approaches nature in a very personal way. As a host for Earthfoot, a collective of select ecotour operators from all over the world, Denise takes groups of visitors in the Northern Territory into areas where local human traditions are still intact and where she can share her wealth of knowledge about local history, geology and local fauna and flora.

We learned of Denise while we were exploring the Northern Territory and we have been in close contact with her ever since. We thought you would enjoy reading some of her wonderful, touching short stories about Aborigine life. She has given us permission to share some of them with you here. Denise's autobiography will be replete with these kinds of stories, we know because we have already seen many of them! These will just whet your appetite.

The Baby
The Importance of Nail Polish
What Happened When I Caught a Snake
