The Argyle diamond mine is the largest open diamond mine in the world. It produces approximately 35% of the world's diamonds although most are only of only industrial quality. It is famous for its gem quality yellow and pink diamonds, too.

Near the mine, Lake Argyle on the Ord River is the second largest storage reservoir in Australia -- holding nine times as much water as Sydney Harbour.
