On the Road in Western Australia

Western Australia is isolated by desert from Australia's population and power centers to the east. Most of it is quite remote and it is Australia's largest state. We think of it as a state of incredible contrasts.

The only remaining frontier in non-desert Australia is to the north, known as the Kimberly region. The Kimberley is remote and rugged, and it is three times the size of England. Its rugged climate and landscape has discouraged attempts at settlement and it is still the least-populated area of northern Australia, home to vast cattle and sheep stations.

Perth, considered the world's most isolated city, is the celebrated capital city of Western Australia. These are some random scenes from that glorious part of the world

Australia's infamous 'Road Train'

It is cause for concern when even the tractor gets stuck!

Mustering cattle on the large stations doesn't involve too many horses - bikes and helicopters do much of the job today

.But you can still see horses working along remote tracks in Western Australia's cattle country - they like to move the cattle along these tracks to save them from walking through the prickly spinifex grasses

They set deliberate burns in Western Australia, too, but it doesn't seem so prevalent as it is in Queensland or in the Northern Territory
