Tunnel Creek

You can visit the ancient rock formations of Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek from the Gibb River Road.

This area was the hide-out of an Aboriginal tracker outlaw called Jundumarra or 'Pigeon'. In 1984, Pigeon shot two policemen and then fled with a band of dissident Aborigines. They skillfully eluded search parties for more than two years. Pigeon was eventually trapped and killed in Tunnel Creek. He and his band had hidden high up in the inaccessible gullies of the adjoining Napier Range.

Tunnel Creek itself is a 750m-long tunnel cut by the creek through a spur of the Napier Range. It is 3 -to- 15m wide and you can walk all the way through it in very cold, sometimes chest deep water. It isn't for the faint-hearted.
